Small Business Week Profile: Ben Saks

5 Questions with: Ben Saks, Judaica Central

1.) What is your favorite part about selling Judaica?

My favorite part of selling Judaica is knowing the customer or end user of the Judaica will use the items for fulfilling their ritual obligation and will use it for many more years to come.

2.) How did you get started in this business?

I initially started out in the Judaica industry by trying to get my own wedding tallit bag embroidered. I first tried to get it embroidered by store but they stated they could only embroider their own bags. I then started researching and learning how to embroider tallit bags, challah covers and got into Judaica embroidery. Then customers asked for additional products for as mezuzah cases, scrolls, shofar and other High Holiday items, thus Judaica Central was born.

Judaica Central is the only stand alone full-line Judaica studio and has the largest selection of the newest Judaica in the Arizona. We have been featured in multiple local and National publications for our Judaica manufactured line and merchandising expertise. Judaica Central was awarded 'Best Judaica Shop in the Valley' by Jewish News Reader's Choice 2018. We also ship Judaica items across the USA and even to Puerto Rico.

Judaica Central also has a Bnai Mitzvah Tutoring division, which we provide both affiliated & unaffiliated families with in-home Bnai Mitzvah preparation in Torah, Haftorah, Hebrew, and all forms of prayer service chanting.

3.) What is your favorite Jewish holiday and why?

My favorite Jewish Holiday is Hanukkah. As a Judaica Shop owner, I love helping people chose the right style of menorah that fits them best. In addition, providing them with all candles, traditional oil cups, and all the fun decoration items that go along with Hanukkah.

4.) How do you participate in Jewish life in Phoenix?

My wife Esther and our 2-year-old son, JoJo, participate and attend various Jewish community and synagogues that our extended families attend. We also provide donations to Ezras Cholim of Arizona who help people in need (Jewish and non-Jewish) with a food pantry and hospital visits. Judaica Central also sponsors and holds vendor booths at various Jewish expos and events during the year.

5.) What does it mean to you when you use a piece of Judaica that holds a special significance?

I would have to say my Wedding Tallit. It holds special significance of meaning of marriage and the traditional black stripes shawl. Also, the elegance of a custom crystal atarah (tallit neck collar) which beautifies the mitzvah of wearing a tallit.
